A mid-size financial services firm was operating separate payment processing systems for each of their 5 payment providers. This fragmented approach created reconciliation nightmares, inconsistent transaction reporting and an inability to offer unified payment experiences to clients.
We designed a unified payment API gateway using Node.js and Express, with a PostgreSQL-backed transaction store. Each payment provider was wrapped in an adapter pattern, exposing a consistent API interface. The gateway handles payment routing, retry logic, idempotency and comprehensive transaction logging.
Transaction processing time reduced by 70%. Reconciliation effort decreased from 4 hours daily to 15 minutes. The unified API enabled the client to onboard new payment providers in days instead of weeks, and transaction reporting became available in real-time through a built-in dashboard.
